5:23p Thoughts From the Day Job
Motivation seems to be returning. This is good.
- Phone tech support for Hunter's grandma.
- Replaced CPU fan on Wren's desktop, thereby allowing it to boot.
- Updated video driver on Nikki's laptop, which while improving the overall graphics, did not solve the flickering problem.
- Keeping today's food log updated.
- Got writing done on my lunch break.
The candy canes on my desk (SweeTart and Life Saver) and the chocolate bells in the candy jar (Reese's and Butterfinger) are tempting me. Oddly enough, I haven't eaten either because I don't have the nutritional information.
At home, moving our pantry shelves into the basement has prevented me from snacking as much. Laziness about going down and back up the stairs has made me abandon the desire to snack about 60% of the time. The witty plaques have returned to the kitchen wall, and I will soon have a dishwasher. This excites me in ways that kitchen appliances should not.
Ground my own coffee last night, and brewed it again on the timer this morning. It feels good, and right, and I have no idea why. In the past, I have put off brewing my own, preferring to go to a local coffee shop, even if it was to pick up on the way to work. Even chains like Beaners and Tim Hortons have benefited from my lack of desire to brew at home. Maybe it's the enormous thermos in which I'm storing my coffee. Maybe it's that I've ground the beans myself (the aroma of the beans as they're grinding is just... indescribable). I've brewed -good- coffee at home before, but I've never really enjoyed it this much.
Also, delicious.
Looks like the drive home will be slow and careful. My guess is 2.5 inches of snow, but I haven't checked with any weather services. I feel for the southeastern states right now; they're not used to this sort of thing. Lizard popsicle?

Of course, in my book even properly chilled tuna fish sandwiches are the lowest of all lunch possibilities. If you ever see me eating one, you'll know it was my only other choice besides chewing on my own foot.

5:09p Helpful advice.
Here's a helpful hint from Saturday morning: When experiencing your first migraine headache, don't drop your only bottle of Sinus Blend essential oil mixture. Not only does the store you bought it from no longer exist, but the neck of the bottle, in all its smallness, will shatter, sending miniscule shards of brown glass all over the tub. Also, the oils will discolor same.
You will be moving so slowly and painfully that your wife, who has far too much experience with migraines, will clean up the mess while you stand there like an idiot. She will also discover that the tub is no longer draining. At all.
Just don't do it, kids.
P.S. - Both brainmeats and tub (jerks) have since resumed normal functionality.
current music: Can't Cry Anymore - Sheryl Crow - Wanna Buy a Monkey?

12:00p Thoughts from the Day Job
Brought some delicious Traverse City cherry coffee to work today. Got it at Horrocks, ground it in Nikki's white elephant gift from the Cramptons (which ended up being mine, because she spoils me something fierce), brewed it in my coffee maker, and brought it to work in my white elephant gift from the Cramptons. Did I mention that it's damn tasty?
I spent most of the Micro Center gift card that I got from my parents. Let's see if I can tick off the ways in which I spoiled myself: Still have a bit left on the card, for future miscellaneous geekery.

Horoscope for 23 Dec 2009: TAURUS (April 20-May 20): According to astronomer Mark Whittle, the Big Bang began in silence. Soon it crescendoed into a majestic major third chord 50 octaves below middle A. Then it transformed, over the course of a million years, into a wistful minor third chord. In my vision of the first two-thirds of 2010, the music of your life will have a similar pattern: It begins with silence. Next, it progresses into a lush major feel, with spirited and complex contrapuntal themes. Then in June, it evolves into a dreamy, contemplative phase. By late September, however -- unlike the Big Bang -- you will move into a third act, in which the music of your life returns to the lively mood it had at the start, only now with the gravitas that the reflective phase has instilled.
Horoscope for 30 Dec 2009: TAURUS (April 20-May 20): My Taurus friend Jill had a dream in which she stopped by a blackberry bush on a summer afternoon. All the ripe blackberries were too high on the bush, just out of reach. She stood there gazing longingly up at them for a long time. Finally three people in medieval garb came by, as if having stepped out of a deck of Tarot cards -- a warrior, magician, and priestess. "I really want those blackberries," she said to them. "Could you give me a boost?" They stooped down to make their backs available. She climbed up, but still couldn't reach the berries. "Oh well, we tried," she said. "Follow us," said the priestess, and she did. After a while they came to another bush whose blackberries were lower and easy to pluck. Then the four shared the feast. After analyzing the omens for 2010, Taurus, I've come to the conclusion that Jill's dream is an apt metaphor for your best possible destiny in 2010.

11:09a Fight or Flight goes live!
Fight or Flight, a webcomic written by yours truly, drawn by Richard Schlaack, is now live!
The first page debuted at midnight on 01.01.10 (GMT/Zulu). A new page will come out every Friday on the same schedule. I'm so excited about this I could implode. I can't wait for more of the story to unfold, and to share it with everyone. :)

jer_ asked people what important things they recall from this year were ...
So I thought I'd do another year-in-review. I haven't done this on LJ in like five years or so, but I used to do it every year (link is on the right for those who like to look way back). I do it mostly for me, because I don't want to troll through my entire LJ every time I want to find something I wrote or linked to that I thought was worthwhile.
Some of the posts referred to are locked, though they are probably just friend-locked, so, there you go.
Let's see: January Start and completely fail to continue a trial gym membership. Auto show overload My favorite moments with friends In which I post 10 random things about myself AND photos of my hot girlfriend
February Merely days later, I ask Lucy to marry me. Coincidence? I think not! I win an award for my work, and Lucy starts the Epic Journey of Clover, the Dachshund of Doom. I post at length about my favorite geek fantasy of all time.
March Winter, begone! I visit Lucy in North Branch, MI (not much of a post, but an important time nonetheless). In which I refer to the Great Bloodletting of 2009. What it means to me to be over 30. Jane McGonigal dresses as a Katamari. Yes, that's important to me. "There is nowhere to start from, not even the unity of the human condition."
April Questions from the masses "It's not a virtue to be easily persuaded by people" - one of my favorite videos The intersection of Fiction, Journalism and Advertising Amazon apologizes for being douchy More Q & A's including "Am I a grownup? A really sweet late-april day The problem with being hyper-concerned with "what is fair" (which I think many of my easily-outraged friends should read)
May Penguicon photos, plus guild drama (now f-locked) "Enlightenment is knowing the joke so well, you don't even have to say it" (another favorite video) NEW COMPUTER DAY karaoke songs I like to sing (plus We discover The Inn Place!) (plus highlights) Penguicon hand-off and chili-cheese musings Jer eats weird things, news at 11
June "Well you just laughed it off, it was all OK." Adam Savage talks about the importance of failure A genuine question regarding God Photos of the new 3000+ ft suite at work! Also other rambling Teresa goes missing Lucy and I start our Great Summer Roadtrip (and I summarize why it was awesome here)
July Futurism gone awry - what did authors get wrong? Engagement party photos! Also, my tire go splode. "Life is good." Mary Louise Parker writes an Ode to Men Scientific Method or go home. 89x morning show implodes over search for The Dark Pooper ... But more interestingly than that, a ragged band of bloggers from all walks of life has, to my mind, done a better job of subjecting an entire industry's claims to meaningful, public, scientific scrutiny than the media, the industry itself, and even its own regulator. #selfportraitfriday
August "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." The best conversation-in-comments my journal has seen this year. Some dude tries to add me on Facebook. I get annoyed. "I'd like someone, anyone, to explain to me how my culture reached a position where a public entertainment company can be criticized for failing to contribute to the moral decay of the land, and that the criticism would be taken seriously, and the company would cringe and promise to do better." Construct, the new convention, quick review Dramatic titling of a post about torture that gets me in trouble with my fiancee Construct photos! Ted Kennedy dies I attend the groundbreaking of a new production/teaching studio in Allen Park
September (man these things take a long time to put together, I should post less) Hackerspaces and i3detroit I drool all over my blazingly fast computer, and neglect talking about how it shuts down if I stand up too fast "But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities." Ahh, I've now discovered that my computer explodes at random "When people believe they have absolute knowledge with no testing reality, this is how the behave." One of my all-time favorite (brief) videos on science, and on what is and is not dehumanizing. (Second favorite is A Glorious Dawn, with Sagan) Eidos takes a master-stroke at defeating piracy May an intervention be staged on the day I believe I truly deserve the advantages I have been given. A poll on how people converse: passively, actively, aggressively. In which I post about Aspartame, and find I'm mistaken
October Glenn Beck foams at the mouth because he can't deny someone the liberty he espouses to hold dear Boobs cure cancer (A very important post brought to you by Cdawg) IllDoctrine totally "gets" the Roman Polanski mess, and I go on yet again about the Rule of Law. Messed up my back pt 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 National Coming Out Day BW3 does me a solid On being an apologist for men I make a gift list public for the first time in, like, ever. I get my first blood test results in, like, ever On H1N1, the real deal Outrage vs ignoring bullies I get mushy about my sweetie (can you tell I'm kind of sick of this list?) "1001 rules for my unborn son
November I joined a gym, and this is how it's working out so far A meme about posting uplifting things that I'd like to recall later :) "It's okay if I literally destroy marriage by getting a divorce, but it is wrong to perpetuate a family unit with someone of the same gender." On being particular with words. Also, today can DIAF. I had over some girls and we played games, and it was really, really good. The best casemods for a vid-head like me, ever Weird, shitty dreams Plausible Deniability. You're doing it wrong. (Psalm 109 merch) The H-bomb Personality, which stirs up lots of fun! The Skennedy in a nutshell
December (finally!) Introducing Sugru, which I subsequently buy! Debunking counterclaims to Global Warming "Bro" vs the N word Lucy flips out 'cause of the board exam, and I sympathize mightily Drinking the Google Kool-Aid How do you feel about privacy? Do you hold it closely or let it go, and how much do you think it matters today? Nice Guys vs nice guys redux. Bonus: Caledonia Best Flash games review - stuff I like! People on LJ you should be reading Where I struggle with video codecs and completely lose my audience Struggling with Other People's Problems "If you're not prepared to be wrong, you'll never come up with anything original. Deep thoughts on Christmas and how good I have it First video with my new camera! RIP Omar The BMI slideshow, and how messed up the BMI index is for judging health
Oh also, Happy New Year, folks :)

10:24p Of kittens and the messes they make
You might already know this ... but I adopted a kitten from a shelter a little while back, and named it Calpurnia after my favorite character from my favorite novel. It was my birthday present to myself, this little Cal, and here is a picture of us. This year, I gave wonderful Christmas presents. I got in return a couple of HK items (and now have an absolutely spectacular collection) and a stick vac! I've been cleaning my place since the 25th, and me + new vac = love. Well. Me + kitten = love, really.

11:11p More Pictures and a Video
My Mom's side of the family, the Beans, have a bit of a rocky history lately with Xmas celebrations. A lot of us were able to get together this year at the Bay Valley Inn, which I hadn't been to since I was Hunter's age. Check out some photos that my brother took here.
One more video is up, entitled Aidan's 3rd Birthday Party.
Pretty sure that I've got my gift card (from Mom & Dad) spent in my head.

2:40p Photos and Videos
Apparently, I've got a backlog of these. :)
Here's a photo set of our Meet the Baby event back on August 4.
I've just posted a new video on my YouTube page, entitled Home Video.
More are forthcoming. :)
P.S. - I'm sitting in Theio's, wearing my chain mail bracelet (from Cindy, the mother-in-law) and have updated GoodReads with my review of the first hardcover graphic novel of Warren Ellis'FreakAngels (from Mom & Dad). I've also been browsing MicroCenter's site, trying to decide if there's anything I should pick up with my gift card (from Mom & Dad).

11:33p XMess was awesome, plain and simple.
I'm using my new laptop lap desk (from Nikki) right now, and am relishing the ability to use my mouse while sitting in my new-to-me recliner (from Peter) while watching the first five episodes of the 1984 Transformers series (from Hunter).
Pictures are worth thousands of words, so I'll let them and the videos speak volumes about my holiday celebrations. :)
